The Week Ahead (May 7-11)

Monday, May 7

  • Mental Health Week Presentation
    • Grade 7-9 : Michael Green
      • These presentations will explore the lived realities of LGBTQ2S+ youth in our communities, the impacts of language, the importance of empathy, and how we can all help make our schools safe for and supportive of LGBTQ2S+ people. (Grades 4-9)
      • “Michael Green (he/him) hails from a small town in Nova Scotia and knows firsthand the effects of communities lacking supports for the LGBTQ community. Now living in Edmonton as the altView Foundation‘s Deputy Director,
        he brings his passion for community engagement to Strathcona County and beyond. His role involves guiding altView to even stronger community relationships through Gay Straight Alliance facilitation, community presentations that promote empathy for LGBTQ community members and development of programs to address the needs of LGBTQ people and their allies in rural Alberta. Michael’s guiding principle is that no one should need to leave
        their communities to access vital services and programming.”

    • Grades 4-6 : German Villegas and Karen Haugen
      •  Students will be introduced to mental health, healthy coping mechanisms, supportive relationships and how to take active ownership of one’s well-being. Stress and anxiety will be touched on throughout this presentation, and it will focus mostly on how to be preventative and proactive in caring for personal health. (Grades 4-6)
      • German Villegas and Karen Haugen both have backgrounds in Education, and have since specialized in mental health and healthy relationships. They are both passionate about prevention of illness and violence, and building healthy supportive connections in the community.

Tuesday, May 8

  • Morning:
    • Running Club: 7:15 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.
  • Mental Health Week Presentation:
    • Grades K-3: Amanda Marleau
      • Students will hear a presentation on mindfulness to manage worry and maintaining positive mental health.
      • Amanda Marleau is a registered psychologist from Sherwood Park Primary Care network.

Wednesday, May 9

  • Grade 6 Writing PAT
    • Students in Grade 6 will be completing their Writing PAT beginning at 9:00 a.m.
  • After School
    • Sign Language Club
  • Mental Health Week Presentation: Parent Session at 7:00 p.m.
    • Dr. Reynolds will be discussing common challenges with anxiety for
      children, and how these can develop into challenges for teenagers and adults over
      time. Links between giftedness and anxiety will also be discussed. Parent strategies to
      help their children will be explored, with a focus on everyday resilience strategies that
      are practical in the home.
    • Dr. Shawn Reynolds is a psychologist with Nexus Psychology in Sherwood Park. This practice focuses on psychoeducational assessment of children and youth, and he also works with children and adults with obsessive compulsive challenges. His daughter  is a lifer at New Horizons, and is currently in Grade 6. His family is active at Sherwood Park Alliance Church, and he will be giving this presentation if he survives a half-marathon he’s attempting on May 6.

Thursday, May 10

  • Mental Health Week Presentation: Dr. Jiang & Dr. Sevigny
    • Ingredients to positive mental health.
    • Dr. Jiang & Dr. Sevigny are registered psychologists from the University of Alberta in the Department of Educational Psychology.
