The Week Ahead at NHS (January 21 – 25)


Please note that Friday, January 25, is an in- lieu day. Note also that Elk Island Public Schools will be open and buses will be running, but there is no school for NHS students on that day.

Monday, January 21  (Day 3)

    • Round 1 of the Grade 3 and Grade 4 chess tournament begins at lunch recess. Students will be notified at school. Round 2 begins next week.

Tuesday, January 22 (Day 4)

Wednesday, January 23 (Day 5)

  • County Sponsored Session; Promoting Success – Learning by Building Executive Functioning Skills
    • Take a peek inside the developing brain of a child to learn about the processes that enable kids to engage in problem solving and goal directed behaviors. Learn about these skills and how they impact learning, behavior, emotions, and social interactions. Caregivers will be provided with strategies and resources to assist their children in building their executive functioning skills, including inhibition, working memory and mental flexibility.This session is made possible through Alberta Health Services and New Horizons School.
      • DATE: Wednesday, January 23, 2019
      • TIME: 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
      • LOCATION: New Horizons School, 1000 Strathcona Drive, Sherwood Park
      • This session is for adults only

Thursday, January 24 (Day 1)

    • This will be a Drama Club lunch recess.
    • Round 1 of the Grade 5 and Grade 6 chess tournament begins at lunch recess. Students will be notified at school. Round 2 begins next week.
  • Jump Rope For Heart Kick-Off Assembly (2:30 p.m.)
  • Nighthawks Basketball (4:00 p.m.)
    • Boys Nighthawks vs. Holy Redeemer at NHS
    • Girls Nighthawks vs. Holy Redeemer at Holy Redeemer
  • We are in dire need of referees for our home games on Thursdays after school. If you know of anyone who can help us out, please contact the school.

Friday, January 25 (Day 2) 

  • School is Closed: In Lieu Day
    • In accordance with the collective agreement between the New Horizons Charter School Society and the Alberta Teachers’ Association, teachers are provided with a total of three “in lieu days” during the school year. These days are provided in lieu of parent-teacher conferences related to report cards and Individual Program Plans that are held at various points during the year.
