Nighthawk Basketball Season Off to a Successful Start

New Horizons School is fortunate to be a part of the Elk Island Catholic Schools Sports League since we moved back into Sherwood Park from Ardrossan in 2015.  The welcoming spirit of the league, coaches, and players has allowed NHS students to compete with pride for our school in volleyball, basketball, and badminton.

Basketball is increasing in popularity at NHS as we slowly improve and become more competitive. This year, 18 boys showed up to the junior boys practices. Instead of making cuts, some grade 6 students were invited to join so that all the boys who were interested in playing could be on one of the two teams – a “veteran” and “rookie” team.

Last week, the New Horizons Nighthawks officially began their basketball season with a seeding tournament that ran on the evenings of December 12 and December 13, and much of the day on December 14.

The purpose of the tournament was to decide which teams would make up the “A” League and which teams would make up the “B” league. In total there were 10 boys team and 8  girls teams.

After the round robin, the “Rookie” boys team ended up placing fourth in their pool. Their first game as a team ended in an exciting fashion. With the score tied 27-27, NHS Nighthawk Adam Y. was fouled on his shot with no time left on the clock. He was awarded two free throws. Under extreme pressure in his very first game, his first shot had a bad bounce off the rim. However, Adam was able to sink his second shot and secure a 28-27 win for his team!

The girls also had a successful tournament. They ended up second in their pool after defeating Our Lady of Perpetual Help (B) 33-12 and Holy Redeemer 21-20. The girls ended up placing 4th in their field of 8 teams after coming up short in the bronze game against St. John Paul II. Well done team!

The NHS boys “Veteran” team also had a successful outing losing only one game in the tournament round-robin. They ended up defeating St. Theresa (B) 48-46 in a very close and exciting Bronze Medal game.

The EICS Sports Council will now use the tournament results to establish the “A” and “B” league teams for the 2019-2020 basketball season.

Thank you to EICS for running a well-organized event.

Congratulations to all the players and good luck in the remainder of the season!
