Important Information About the Strike

1. The Big Question

Q: Why aren’t teachers at New Horizons Public Charter School striking?
A: Though our teachers ARE represented by the Alberta Teachers’ Association as public school teachers, our Collective Agreement does not expire until 2026, thus taking job action at this time would be illegal. We understand that this is a complex situation for many of our families and staff members. Our learning will continue to be provided exclusively in-person. Our focus remains on maintaining stability and continuity for our students.

2. Student Transportation

Q: Will my child still be able to access Elk Island Student Transportation?
A: Yes, though there will be some major changes. EIPS will email each family directly with instructions. Finalized bus info. will be emailed to each family by October 3.

3. Frequently Asked Questions About Charter Schools in Alberta (from The Education Act)

  • Public Schools: Charter schools are publicly funded and must follow Alberta’s curriculum.
  • No Religious Affiliation: They cannot be connected to or run by a religion.
  • Specific Purpose to Meet a Need: Each charter must serve a unique educational purpose not already met by other public schools. In our case, we meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of gifted students in a congregated setting.
