Canada’s first public charter school, New Horizons School in Sherwood Park, will commemorate 25 years of service to Sherwood Park, Strathcona County and the Greater Edmonton area with a day of celebration on Friday, January 31, 2020.
Established in 1995 and now enrolling 390 students in kindergarten through grade 9, New Horizons School provides a congregated learning environment that enables academically gifted students to achieve excellence in an environment that supports each student’s unique intellectual, social and emotional needs.
The celebration will begin with a school-wide assembly at 1:00 p.m. Special guests will include Minister of Education LaGrange, Colleen Taylor, who was instrumental in the founding of the school and was its first Board chair, Strathcona County Deputy Mayor Linton Delainey , Sherwood Park MLA Jordan Walker and Strathcona- Sherwood Park MLA and Minister Honourable Nate Glubish, as well as former Board members, administrators, staff members and students.
Colleen Taylor will share her first-hand account of how Canada’s first charter school was formed, and a commemorative plaque will be unveiled.
During the week leading up to the Celebration, students will be working with Quest Theatre preparing for a production that will be performed by our K-6 students after the ceremony. Dignitaries and guests will be invited to attend a small informal reception and school tour during the performance.
Former New Horizons students, staff and directors are invited to attend. For more information and to indicate your attendance, please contact the school office at 780-416-2353.
